Smita Srinivas

Architecture, Planning and Preservation Assistant Professor

Smita Srinivas is an economic development and industry specialist. Her research focuses on technological capabilities, industry development plans, and employment and skills systems. This includes investigating traditional and modern techniques and the co-evolution of jobs and skills with national and supra-national technical standards. Her theoretical and applied works involve projects that examine industry’s social, urban and regional embedding. She is a full-time faculty member at Columbia University’s Urban Planning program in New York City, and the Director of the Technological Change Lab (TCLab) which focuses on connecting economic theory to actual developmental practice in many different continents and contexts. She has written on technology evolution and regulation: Market Menagerie: Health and Development in Late Industrial States (Stanford University Press, Economics and Finance 2012), was co-author on gender and employment issues: Learning from Experience: a gendered approach to social protection for the informal economy (ILO, 2000), and is completing a book on the history and practice of the economics of innovation in developing contexts. Her published articles have appeared in journals such as World Development, Regional Studies, andTheory and Society. Professor Srinivas is also a frequent reviewer for many others on development and industry issues such as Research Policy, Journal of Development Studies, World Development, International Journal of Technology and Globalization and Feminist Economics. She holds a Ph.D. from MIT, pre- and post-doctoral fellowships at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and is the recipient of various grants and awards. She has advised several Columbia Ph.D. students and over 40 M.S. students on their thesis topics, most of which are on tech, industry, and employment questions. She is a Senior Advisor at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), one of the largest urbanization initiatives now developing.
