Coded Bias: Film Screening and Panel Discussion
Imagine Science Film Festival, in partnership with Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute and the Data Science Institute, presents Coded Bias, an exploration of the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini’s startling discovery of racial bias in facial recognition algorithms.
In addition to the film, we are hosting a discussion with director Shalini Kantayya; Jeannette Wing, Avanessians Director of the Data Science Institute and Professor of Computer Science; and journalist Susan E. McGregor, Associate Research Scholar in the Data Science Institute at Columbia University.
About the Film: Coded Bias explores the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini’s startling discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces accurately, and her journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all. About the Film Festival: The non-profit science film organization Imagine Science Films (ISF) announces the 13th Annual Imagine Science Film Festival (ISFF), taking place October 16 – 23, 2020. The festival includes 28 programs with over 80 films, with 30 countries represented. Over the course of eight days, documentaries will explore the intersection of science and society, compelling scientific fictions, mesmerizing scientific imagery, and engaging film experiments.
