Supply Chain Digital Twins: Simulation, Mathematical Optimization, and Misunderstandings

Abstract: Since the term “supply chain” was coined more than four decades ago, the objective of the supply chain function, arguably, has been the same – to optimize the flow of information, resources, materials, and finance. How we do those things have been and will continue to be a function of the latest technology, management thinking, and time-tested best practices. The abundance of relevant data, computational power, and improved algorithms have greatly facilitated the opportunities to optimize and simulate supply chains and operations. Yet, not all approaches to data science are created equal, and the requirements to structure mathematical models using some techniques and algorithms are quite different depending on the problem at hand – and honestly, not well understood by everyone in the industry. During this seminar, we will explain what we mean by “digital twin” simulation and optimization and common misunderstandings and potential “traps” that future industry data scientists should pay particular attention to when dealing with real industry data science projects. Although the functional examples are from supply chains and operations, the lessons apply to other functions (e.g., marketing, finance, services, manufacturing, etc.) when dealing with digital twin simulation and optimization.
