Marco G. Giometto is an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at Columbia University. He received his BS and MS degrees from the University of Padua, a PhD from Braunschweig TU University in 2014 and a second PhD from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in 2016. He is the 2016 recipient of the EPFL EDME Award for the best thesis in mechanical engineering. Before joining Columbia University in 2018, he held postdoctoral positions at the University of British Columbia and at the Center for Turbulence Research, which is jointly operated by Stanford University and NASA Ames.

Marco’s research is centered on the fundamental study of turbulence using highly scalable parallel algorithms and big data. His goal is to advance current understanding of turbulent transport in engineering and environmental systems, and to develop new reduced-order physical models for use in interdisciplinary applications (e.g. to enable large-scale computations of practical engineering flows). Insights from his research have implications in geophysics, engineering, biology, and energy technologies, where heat and mass transfer, evaporation, and skin friction often determine system performance or environmental impact.
