Data helps us discover new knowledge, interpret the world, make decisions, and even predict the future. The capabilities we derive from data science will drive our cars, treat disease, and keep us safe, but at the same time, such capabilities risk leading to biased, inappropriate, or unintended action. The design of data science solutions requires both excellence in the fundamentals of the field and expertise to develop applications that meet human challenges without creating even greater risk.

Jeannette Wing, Avanessians Director of the Data Science Institute (DSI), discusses these unique opportunities and challenges with the Columbia at Home audience. She also speaks about DSI’s mission, and shares recent highlights across its education and research.
