The Columbia University Data Science Institute (DSI) gave a warm welcome to the 195 students of the Fall 2024 Master’s in Data Science cohort with a weeklong orientation on August 26-30. The new students were immersed in a range of activities designed to introduce them not only to their new school but also to the dynamic city of New York—and most importantly, to each other.

“You are joining a community of innovators dedicated to using data for good and shaping the future,” said Garud Iyengar, the Avanessians Director of the Data Science Institute, as he officially welcomed the group. “Embrace this opportunity to learn, explore, and make a meaningful impact.”

This year’s cohort stands out in more ways than one. Chosen from a highly competitive pool of 2,300 applicants, the class represents over 16 countries and, for the first time, is comprised of a majority of female-identifying students—a milestone for the program.

To help the students connect, DSI invited them to share their interests, goals, and what they are most excited about at Columbia. Find out what they said.
