Marissa Thompson is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Columbia University. Broadly, her research focuses on the causes and consequences of racial and socioeconomic inequality. Her current work explores, for example, beliefs about fairness and inequality, the role of genetic ancestry tests in racial boundary-making processes, and the incomplete take-up of social safety net benefits. She uses a range of empirical approaches in her work, including quantitative methods, survey and audit experiments, and both computational and qualitative analyses of text data. Her research has been published in journals such as the American Journal of Sociology, Social Forces, Sociological Science, and PNAS. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from Stanford University and a B.S.E. from the University of Pennsylvania.
