She directs the Lightwave Research Laboratory and leads multiple research programs on optical interconnection networks for advanced computing systems, data centers, optical packet switched routers, and nanophotonic networks-on-chip. Bergman received the National Science Foundation CAREER award in 1995 and the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator in 1996. In 1997, she won the CalTech Presidents Award for joint work with JPL on optical interconnection networks, and in 2008, received the IBM Faculty Award. Bergman holds a Ph.D. from MIT and is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and of the Optical Society of America (OSA). She currently serves as the coeditor in chief of the IEEE/OSA Journal of Optical Communications and Networking.
