Politicians and other public figures will no longer have the benefit of exceptions on Facebook and Instagram if their posts contain language that incites violence and hatred. Violations will lead to restrictions and penalties that could range from a one-month ban of the account to total removal from the platform.

Data Science Institute associate research scholar Susan McGregor sees a valuable precedent in creating awareness that we are all responsible for our words, regardless of title or position. She shared her perspective with Voz de América.

“This refers to treating people as persons and recognizing that politicians should not be above the law, and should not be above the rules of the communities in which they participate, be it a social media platform or a city square.”
